Station depths
See also: Traffic и Types of metro stations.
Depth profiles are built approximately on the basis of a variety of disparate and very incomplete data from a variety of sources: archival reports on the construction of the metro, comments on specialized forums, open and reconstructed data, common sense and general information about the hydrogeology of Saint-Petersburg. The exact data, of course, is classified.

Ground stations (◉ on the map below)
Stations built directly on the surface of the earth.
Shallow stations (◉ on the map below)
Stations built in the so-called "open" way, i.e. by digging a pit from the surface of the earth.
Depth from 20 down to 40 meters (◉ on the map below)
And these are the stations of the so-called deep laying. They are built underground with the help of tunneling shields.
From 40 down to 50 meters (◉ on the map below)
The peculiarity of Saint-Petersburg is a very complex hydrogeological situation. A lot of aquifers, weak soils, underground rivers under monstrous pressure. Therefore, the metro in Saint-Petersburg has to be built really deep underground.
From 50 down to 60 meters (◉ on the map below)
And even deeper.
From 60 down to 70 meters (◉ on the map below)
And very deep.
From 70 down to 80 meters (◉ on the map below)
Some stations, for various reasons, have to be built especially deep. For example, to ensure the passage of distillation tunnels under the Neva riverbed.
Deeper than 80 meters (◉ on the map below)
And here we see the most difficult case. Diving to such a depth is necessary when there is simply no other way to build a station closer to the surface.
